A Harry Potter birthday party is always a great excuse to make fun potions and experiment with different ingredients. In Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, Harry becomes the new Potions teacher’s star pupil by using an old copy of Advance Potion Making that belonged to the Half Blood Prince. You can use this fun detail for your child’s Harry Potter party and use these 5 potions to make your Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince birthday party a great success. Make sure you label all the ingredients with magical names, like Dragon Scales, Dragon Blood, Acromantula Venom, Bulbadox Powder, Bundimum Secretion, Belladonna, Fluxweed and Murtlap Essence.- Make Slime
- Bubbling Potion
- Unicorn Milk Color Wheel
- Fun with Dragon Blood
- Invisible Ink
Premix a 4-oz bottle of glue gel in 1 cup of water, add a couple of drops of food coloring, until you have the color of your choice. To make a nasty green-yellow color, add 2 drops of yellow or 2 drops of yellow and 1 drop of green. Also premix a borax solution by stirring borax into about a half a cup of hot water, until borax stops dissolving.
At the party, have the kids add 1/3 cup to the glue solution. They can stir, or use their hands. You can give each kid their own glue mix to add the borax to, and use different colors, or just make one batch. Make sure to use magical names for the ingredients.
Everyone knows what happens when you put vinegar and baking soda together. Lots of fun bubbling action! When you have the kids make this potion, of exploding scales and Murtlap Essence, make sure you have plenty of paper towels available, because it will get messy. You can make the Murtlap Essence a different color with food coloring, for an even better effect.
For this potion, use 2% or whole (unicorn) milk in a shallow plate or bowl, and add drops of different colors of food coloring in separate sections of the milk. Touch the milk with a cotton swab dipped in dishwashing detergent and watch the magic happen. You can judge which child makes the nicest color wheel and award point for their House, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin.
To make the Dragon Blood, or Red Cabbage indicator, cut a red cabbage into small pieces. Add enough water to cover and boil for 10 minutes. Cool and strain, so you only have the juice left. Now when you add this Dragon Blood to other ingredients, they change color, based on the pH of the liquid. An acidic fluid like lemon juice or vinegar will be red or purple, a basic ingredient such as antacids or baking soda will make it blue-green or greenish-yellow.
What kid doesn’t like to have some invisible ink to write with and write secret messages? For this you mix equal parts water and baking soda. Write your message using a cotton swab. You can reveal the message by brushing it with grape juice or grape juice concentrate or by heating over a light bulb.
Of course, these potions, and any Harry Potter birthday party requires quite a bit of preparation.
