Ideas For First Birthday Party: The Time Capsule

I get a lot of questions about ideas for a first birthday party. If you have ever been to a baby’s first birthday party, you probably noticed that the baby had no interest in the gifts, but loved the boxes and the wrapping paper. One year olds also don’t have a thriving social life, so there really are no friends for baby to invite. The conclusion is that if you are having a party, you really should have one for yourself, as this is the first anniversary of your baby’s birth and you survived the first year. Congratulations!

Celebrate the day with close friends and family and commemorate your baby’s birthday with a time capsule that she can open on his 18th or 21st birthday. A time capsule is a great way to keep all those memories from her first year. It also includes your friends and family, who can include items, birthday wishes and special messages in the time capsule. Here are some things you can ask your guests to bring, or can include in the time capsule yourself:

  • Front page of the local newspaper
  • Weather report
  • Movies that are playing in the theaters
  • A favorite toy she no longer plays with
  • Her first outfit
  • First set of shoes or slippers, if she has outgrown them
  • Vital Statistics, such as length and weight
  • Record of what baby can do
  • Record of what baby cannot do yet
  • Wishes and messages from guests
  • Items from the first party, such as the party hat and a special bib
  • A letter from you with your favorite memories from the first year and perhaps your hopes and dreams for her

To include the messages from your guests, have some scrapbook paper ready and pretty markers, so that they can write their wishes on pretty paper. You can also have a small scrapbook ready for guests to write their messages in.

Put all the items in a pretty box, such as a large shoe box covered in wrapping paper. You can also use a popcorn tin or a plastic container. Seal it and put a label on it with your baby’s name and the date it is to be opened. You can designate either the 18th or 21st birthday to make those birthdays extra special. If you have the popcorn tin or plastic box, you can bury the time capsule in the backyard. Just don’t forget to dig it up if you move. Otherwise, stick it in the back of your closet or other spot it can stay for the next 20 years.
