Kids Birthday Party Tip: Bigger Is Not Better

August 6th, 2009

Do you feel the pressure of inviting your child’s entire class? Depending on what school they go to, before you know it you have 20 kids on your guest list. Can you afford to take all those kids to the most popular birthday party location in your town? Are you willing to have 20+ kids running wild in your house? Chances are you answered no to those last 2 questions.

Keeping your parties small is smart for several reasons.

  • Your pocketbook. Large parties run out of hand quickly. You add the per child expenses up for the party, the food and the goody bags and you’ll see the expenses add up.
  • When you have a smaller party, you can spend a little more per child to make the experience truly special.
  • A smaller party is more intimate. You can provide fun games, activities and crafts. The kids can really play together, interact more and create more memories.
  • A large crowd can be overwhelming for the birthday child AND the guests. The golden rule is to have 1 guest for each year the child is old, plus perhaps 1-2 more, depending on the child. So if your child turns 6, invite 6 kids and maybe 1 or 2 more.

Don’t be afraid to keep the party small. You don’t have to invite the entire class. If the rule at school is that you cannot distribute birthday invitations unless it is to the entire class, mail the invitations. It may take a little research and some extra effort, but in the end it is well worth it. Your wallet and sanity will thank you with special memories.
